The statistical support factor is based on the statistical distribution of imperfections. It reflects the effect that the larger the highly loaded area, the greater the probability that a defect will encounter a critical load. The statistical support factor thus describes a strength advantage if the highly stressed area is smaller than that of a standardized specimen, and a strength penalty if the highly stressed area is larger than that of a standardized specimen.
