DIN 3961 defines 12 levels of gear tooth quality. 1 is the finest gear tooth quality (hardly reproducible) and 12 is the coarsest.

The various qualities can be achieved with the following production techniques:

Quality
  • Quality levels 2-6: honed
  • Quality levels 2-7: ground
  • Quality levels 5-7: shaved (cold-rolled)
  • Quality levels 5-9: hobbed, planed, shaped
  • Quality levels 7-12: milled, reamed, planed/shaped by forming tool
  • Quality levels 8-12: punched, pressed, sintered, injected
Uses
  • Quality levels 1 through 4: master gears
  • Quality levels 5 through 12: gear wheels
