The normal pressure angle is the angle between the profile reference line and the line of action for a reference tool and workpiece pairing. The line of action is the tangent to the base circle. It passes through the contact points of the reference tool-workpiece mesh and the rolling point.
The normal pressure angle αn is equal to the profile angle αp of the reference profile.
Large pressure angles indicate a flat profile with a tendency toward pointed teeth and a thick tooth root. Small pressure angles lead to a thick tooth tip and a narrow tooth root.
