Normal pressure angle

Symbol αn
Unit °
Attribute-ID normal pressure angle
Numeric ID 1015
Value Type PMTechValue

The normal pressure angle is the angle between the profile reference line and the line of action for a reference tool and workpiece pairing. The line of action is the tangent to the base circle. It passes through the contact points of the reference tool-workpiece mesh and the rolling point.

The normal pressure angle αn is equal to the profile angle αp of the reference profile.

Large pressure angles indicate a flat profile with a tendency toward pointed teeth and a thick tooth root. Small pressure angles lead to a thick tooth tip and a narrow tooth root.

Asymmetrical gears can also be considered using the "load distribution (FEM)" calculation objective. Here, this value applies to the left flank. A different pressure angle can be specified for the right flank.
