The tensile strength Rm (also σB) is a key mechanical material property. It indicates the maximum stress a material can withstand in a tensile test before it breaks. The value is given in megapascals (MPa) or N/mm².
The tensile strength is determined using a standardized tensile test. In this test, a standardized sample is pulled apart with steadily increasing force until it tears. The tensile strength Rm is the highest stress measured during this test.
