According to Niemann / Winter, the calculation of the wear resistance for bevel gears without axle offset is provided for. In FVA 49 this calculation method is also applied to hypoid gears.

In the calculation, bevel gearings (without hypoid offset) are approximated with replacement spur gears and hypoid gears with replacement bevel gears. The calculation procedure is the same as for spur gears. In principle, the expected wear is estimated by comparing certain weighted influencing parameters of a test gear (with known wear behaviour) and the gear to be recalculated.

The comparison of calculation results for the wear resistance of bevel gears with test results is still pending. Due to the different stress conditions of cylindrical gears (point contact of the usually crowned bevel gear teeth, longitudinal sliding of hypoid gears) the results should be handled with care.
