If the calculation is performed with at least one backflow, an axial backflow of lubricant into the cavitation area occurs due to the difference between the pressure at the front or rear bearing edge and the pressure in the cavitation area. This gradient causes an axial backflow from the bearing edge, as it can occur as a result of a strong flow restriction. Furthermore, the backflow from the bearing edge allows an axial lubricant supply to be simulated so that no hydrostatic lubricant supply pockets are required. On the other hand, if the calculation is performed without backflow, the pressure drop at the bearing edge must be zero.

Calculation with backflow is recommended. In particular, this stabilizes the calculation of tilting pad bearings.
