The Brinell hardness value HBW describes the resistance of a material to penetration by a spherical test specimen. The method is one of the static hardness testing methods and is particularly suitable for soft to medium-hard materials (e.g.; unhardened steels, cast iron, non-ferrous metals).

In the Brinell test, a hard metal ball is pressed into the workpiece surface with a defined force (in Newtons) over a certain period of time (in seconds). The diameter of the permanent indentation is then measured. The Brinell hardness value in the unit HBW is calculated from the test force, the ball diameter, and the indentation diameter.

The test conditions are specified with the hardness value, e.g: HBW 10/3000/15
→ 10 mm ball diameter, 3000 kp test force, 15 seconds load duration.

According to FKM 616, the relationship between Brinell hardness and Vickers hardness can be approximated as follows:
HB = (HV + 1.07)/1.03.
If only the tensile strength (R_m) is known, the following approximation can be used:
HB = R_m/3.5.
