The operating backlash refers to the backlash under load. When calculating the operating backlash, the deformation of the teeth and the wheel body are considered in addition to the load-related relative position changes. The operating backlash is based on the FE influence coefficient method, which makes it possible to calculate the deformations. To minimize the negative influence on the excitation behavior and the thermal design of the gearing, the backlash must be set as accurately as possible; it should be neither too small nor too large.
Two methods are available for the operating backlash: the linear and the iterative calculation methods. The iterative calculation method is recommended. It requires longer computing time but produces more accurate results.
When activating the operating backlash calculation, the influence coefficients method = FEM influence numbers must also be set.
