Different widths are used for analysis of load carrying capacity depending on the damage mechanism.
The remaining tooth flank width is used for determining the pitting resistance according to ISO 6336:2006 (see ISO 6336:2006 part 2 section 5.3).
As an extension of the method, a chamfer can be specified in the FVA-Workbench that reduces the common face width (see bw in the drawing).
A different face width is used for determining the tooth root load carrying capacity according to ISO 6336:2006: the width of the smaller gear plus max 1x module on each tooth end (see ISO 6336:2006 part 3, section 5.2.2, footnote 3).
As an extension of the method, a chamfer can be specified in the FVA-Workbench that reduces the common face width. The criterion of an overhang of max. 1x module is unaffected.
