The bearing operating clearance is the total distance by which one bearing ring can be shifted relative to another in the radial or axial direction under operating conditions. It is not a qualitative, but rather a constructive feature.

Bearing operating clearance:
- Radial clearance: bearings with a contact angle α = 0° as well as self-aligning ball bearings and spherical roller bearings
- Axial clearance: all other rolling bearings
The minimum, maximum, and mean operating clearance can be specified. The following tolerance classes are assumed:
- Shaft tolerance k6 according to DIN 286
- Bore tolerance H7 according to DIN 286
- Bearing tolerance class P0 according to DIN 620
- Bearing clearance class CN according to DIN 620
