The determination of bevel or hypoid gear geometry begins with the calculation of the pitch cone parameters. ISO 23509 (2016) provides the following four methods, each of which requires specific input data:
- Method 0:
- Calculation of bevel gears (hypoid offset = 0),
- Face width factor: cbe2 = 0.5
- Method 1:
- Calculation of hypoid gears,
- Face hobbing or face milling possible,
- It is necessary to determinate the Face width factor cbe2, because the calculation point is not in the middle of the wheel face width.
- Used by Gleason
- Method 2:
- Calculation of hypoid gears,
- Only face hobbing,
- Face width factor: cbe2 = 0.5,
- Used by Oerlikon
- Method 3:
- Calculation of hypoid gears,
- Face hobbing or face milling possible,
- Face width factor: cbe2 = 0.5,
- Usually used by Klingelnberg
