The position of a shaft in space is defined by:
Angle of rotation around the negative u-axis φu and the absolute nominal center distance a of the cylindrical gear stage or nominal center distance (in the v-direction) + nominal center distance (in the w-direction).
The shaft angle φu indicates the angle of the center distance a in the v-w plane to the w-axis around the negative u-axis.
The sign (+/-) of the shaft angle is specified relative to the shaft with the smaller index. For internal-external gear engagements, the center distance coordinates are also defined from the center of the gear with the smaller index to the center of the gear with the greater index.
| a | Center distance |
| av | Center distance in v-direction |
| aw | Center distance in w-direction |
| φu | Shaft angle |
| 1 | Gear with smaller index |
| 2 | Gear with larger index |
