Temperature factor

The value 1 is assumed for the temperature factor in the range from 0°C - 120°C for gear bodies or oil temperature.

When the operating temperature leads the gear body temperature to fall under 0°C, the following should be noted for the materials used:

• Low Charpy notched impact strength
• Brittle fracture transition or NDT temperature (Nil Ductility Transition-Temperature)
• Carbon content below 0.4%
• Use of highly alloyed nickel steels
• Use of heating elements to increase lubricant and gear temperatures

A value greater than 1 is assumed for the temperature factor for operating temperatures over 120°C.

At temperatures over 150°C, the hardness and strength losses of the materials used must be taken into consideration.
